Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park & Ice Rink
What is there 4 recorded
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park & Ice Rink sits downtown at 353 Court Street. Its origin goes back to the 1960s and the Southeast Loop Renewal Plan. That plan came after the Inner Loop cut downtown off from nearby neighborhoods. It was also called Manhattan Square Park and Southeast Loop Park. Landscape architect Lawrence Halprin designed the park. A 2002 master plan guided its later renewal. The park is eligible for the state and national historic registers, for its urban-renewal history and for Halprin’s design. Its playground sits across from The Strong. The outdoor ice rink has a kidney-shaped surface and a warming shelter with a heated floor and a fireplace.
